The Interconfessional Diploma in Theory and Practice of Bible Translation (IDTB)

The Interconfessional Diploma in Theory and Practice of Bible Translation (IDBT) is part of the educational offering of the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Urbaniana University (PUU) within the second cycle of studies for the Licentiate in Biblical Theology. It is intended as a concrete tool for the formation of specialists in Bible translation (Verbum Domini 115).
The IDBT is characterized by an interconfessional dimension: in fact, the teaching activity is accomplished both by PUU teachers and by external teachers who are specialists in biblical translation and belong to the various Christian confessions (Anglican, Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant), in the context of the “Common Bible Work” initiated by the Second Vatican Council (Dei Verbum 22, Directory for Ecumenism 183-186).

The Catholic Biblical Federation endorses this programme and recommends it to its members.

Participation

To participate in the DITB it is necessary to have a Bachelor’s degree in Theology and be enrolled in the second cycle of studies for the achievement of the Licentiate (or equivalent) in Biblical Theology.
It is also necessary to have a thorough knowledge of the Hebrew and Greek languages (for PUU students this means the preparatory year plus one semester of the second cycle/level).

The main languages of teaching are Italian and English, for which at least passive knowledge is required. However, to encourage wider participation in the Courses and Seminars, the teaching material (lesson outlines and handouts) and the selected bibliography will be presented in Italian and English.

The exams relating to the Courses and Seminars may be taken in Italian and in the main modern languages.
