In the course of the Year of the Word of God and in preparation for the Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Biblical Federation in November 2021, we invite all members and friends of our Federation to pray for God’s blessing, the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and the intercession of Mary, the Mother of the Word, for all its regions and their activities.

Presentation of the Region
Oceania is the youngest region in the Federation, with great challenges in the areas of organization, structure, and cooperation among its members, typical of any beginning. The greatest factor underlying these difficulties are enormous distances that separate the islands and countries of Oceania. Australia and Papua New Guinea play a leading role in the region through relatively well-developed structures and availability of resources. An encouraging sign is that these relatively young Christian Churches understand the need for a sound biblical foundation for their communities and recognize its vital role in the growth of their faith.

Visit of the CBF General Secretary in Papua New Guinea
From May 3 to 22 the General Secretary of the CBF, Fr. Jan J. Stefanów SVD, was on a working visit to Papua New Guinea.

Saturday morning, the 7th of May, brought many people to Kefamo on the outskirts of Goroka town to witness the Episcopal Consecration of Bishop-elect Valentine Gryk, SVD.
Former CBF Coordinator in Oceania appointed Bishop
On February 14, 2022, the Vatican announced that His Holiness, Pope Francis, has appointed a former CBF Oceania Coordinator, Fr. Walenty Gryk, SVD, as Bishop of the Diocese of Goroka in Papua New Guinea.
Centre for Christian Spirituality (Australia)
The Centre for Christian Spirituality was founded in 1978 by Frs David Walker and John Ryan, and Sister Rosa Courtney RSJ. Mr Mark Cotter and Bill Fewster made significant contributions to the foundation.
It grew out of a milieu of programs in the spiritual classics and scriptures, which began in 1972, initiated by Fr Walker after the initial year assisted by Sr Rosa Courtney RSJ. At a time when not a lot was being offered, hundreds of people attended these courses, and were inspired to deepen their faith life. Those who attended were priest, religious, and laity. The programs offered opened up an area of interest that today is more available.

A Cardinal for the peripheries: Papua New Guinea
Cardinal John Ribat is the first Cardinal from Papua New Guinea. He shares to Mark Riedemann his first impressions after he was notify of election. He comments on the heroic work of missionaries in these lands, and yet this is still a land for first evangelization. The local Church is trying to develop their own vocations in this country were modernity and “stone age” costumes clash.
