Nuria Calduch-Benages, born in Barcelona (Spain), is Professor of Old Testament at the Pontifical Gregorian University and Invited Professor at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, Italy. She is the Review Book Editor of the journal Biblica(Pontifical Biblical Institute). She is vice-president of the International Society for the Study of Deuterocanonical and Cognate Literature(ISDCL) and editorial board member of Estudios Bíblicos(Madrid),Vetus Testamentum(Leiden) and Storia delle donne(Firenze). 

In October 2008 she participated as expert in the Synod of Bishops: «The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church». Since 2014 she is member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. In 2016 Pope Franciscus appointed her as member of the Commission for the Study of the Women’s Diaconate.

She is member of the ABE (Asociación Bíblica Española), ABC (Associació de biblistes de Catalunya), ABI (Associazione Biblica Italiana), CBA (Catholic Biblical Association), CTI (Coordinamento di Teologhe italiane) and SBL (Society of Biblical Literature). She assiduously collaborates with the CBF (Catholic Biblical Federation).

She has translated the book of Sirach (with introduction and notes) into Spanish for the Jerusalem Bible, for the Bible of the Spanish Bishops Conference and is currently preparing two books of Collected Essays on Ben Sira (one in English and another one in Spanish) and a commentary of the Greek version of Sirach for an Italian biblical series.

Her research focuses on wisdom literature, deuterocanonical books, especially the book of Ben Sira on which she has written extensively and biblical anthropology. She has published 17 books, 295 essays, 85 reviews, and directed 20 doctoral dissertations. Among her publications in English language may be mentioned:The Perfume of the Gospel: Jesus’ Encounters with Women(Gregorian and Biblical Press, 2012); Wisdom for Life(de Gruyter, 2014) and Savoring the Word.
